2024 RECIPIENT

Tania Islas Torres

Bill and Peggy Britt Scholarship

Loyola Marymount University

Tania Islas Torres credits her parents for instilling her with resilience, compassion and independence. “I am a proud Latina, a product of hardworking immigrant parents who came to this country in search of opportunities,” she said. “Every single day, they inspire me to believe in myself, to dream big and strive for excellence.”

A master’s student at Loyola Marymount University, Tania is working to become a school psychologist with a focus on compassionate care and social justice. She is motivated to alleviate the added challenges facing students with disabilities in marginalized communities.

Tania recalled how her cousin was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, and it inspired her to become an advocate for people with disabilities. During her childhood, Tania remembered how the family unknowingly viewed her cousin's diagnosis as a limitation, believing that she could not be independent.

“Coming from a Mexican-Salvadorian background, mental health and learning disorders in my community are often seen as an impairment,” Tania said. “As a result, many Latinx children do not develop autonomy – not because they are incapable, but because many parents lack information and resources.”

Coming from a marginalized community, I understand the importance of having diverse and compassionate educators.

Since 2022, Tania has volunteered as a crisis counselor, texting individuals in their native language – whether it’s English or Spanish – to help them navigate stressors and work through crises. As a Spanish speaker, Tania found herself able to make those seeking help feel safe and more comfortable to open up.

These experiences led Tania to becoming a behavior interventionist at a Los Angeles school. There she worked with students diagnosed with autism, creating an inclusive space tailored to their individual needs and abilities. “Seeing a nonverbal kid go from not talking to having a full-on conversation with you, that is priceless,” she said. “That’s just so rewarding to me, seeing them grow, seeing them become independent. That’s truly what inspires me to be a better person.”

Leveraging her background and bilingual skills, Tania hopes to create a welcoming environment for all students – both today and in her future career. “My goal is to create culturally responsive and socially just intervention practices that focus on strengths for marginalized students of color,” she said.

Tania’s parents are Amway business owners, and she has connected with how leadership can make a difference and help others grow. “I’ve seen my parents empower their team, and it has inspired me to empower and advocate for my students,” she said. “I feel like it builds a really beautiful community.”

As this year’s recipient of the Bill and Peggy Britt Scholarship, Tania described feeling humbled and motivated by the award. “I want to express my deepest gratitude to Bill and Peggy Britt for their support of me achieving my goal of becoming a culturally responsive school psychologist,” she said. “This scholarship means the world to me, because it not only relieves the burden of financial stress, but also allows me to wholeheartedly focus on my purpose.”
