Steve Van Andel 

Chairman


Steve Van Andel is responsible for managing daily operations of the company. He shares the company’s Office of the Chief Executive with president Doug DeVos. Van Andel has been chairman of the company since 1995 and is the oldest son of Amway co-founder Jay Van Andel. Van Andel was Amway’s vice president – Americas and vice president of marketing before succeeding his father as chairman and leading the expansion of Amway into a stronger and more diversified company to be more competitive in the new economy.

On June 12, 2002, Van Andel concluded his one-year term as the chairman of the United States Chamber of Commerce, during which he traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and to 11 countries in Europe, Latin America and Asia as a tireless advocate for free trade issues. Van Andel served as chairman of the board’s executive committee and currently holds the position of past chairman and member of the board. He also continues his work on behalf of free trade as vice chairman of the U.S. Korea Business Council.

Van Andel is dedicated to the renewal of downtown Grand Rapids, lending his time and support to the Grand Action Committee, the Van Andel Museum Center and the Van Andel Institute, a major health research center in Grand Rapids. He also serves on the Dean’s Advisory Board for the Seidman College of Business at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich.

Van Andel serves on the boards of Business Leaders for Michigan, Gerald R. Ford Foundation and Grand Rapids John Ball Zoo Society. He also serves on the boards of the Metropolitan Health Corp. and the Metropolitan Hospital Foundation in Grand Rapids.

Van Andel earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and business administration from Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich., and is a current member of the school’s board of trustees. He earned an MBA in marketing from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

Doug DeVos 

President


Doug DeVos oversees daily operations of the company and shares Amway’s Office of the Chief Executive with chairman Steve Van Andel.

Since 1986, DeVos has spent his career building enthusiasm for the Amway business. His belief in its ability to foster entrepreneurs around the world is reflected in the company’s record of sales growth during his time as president, since 2002.

He also has helped Amway grow into one of the world’s most international companies. DeVos has also served in various leadership positions in Asia, Europe and the Americas.

DeVos is the youngest son of Amway co-founder Rich DeVos. DeVos is involved in numerous international, national, and local business and civic organizations, including the World Federation Direct Selling Association, National Constitution Center, Business Leaders For Michigan, Economic Club of Grand Rapids, Gerald R. Ford Foundation, Early Childhood Commission and Keystone Community Church. He is chair of The Right Place, a regional economic development organization in West Michigan.

DeVos earned a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University’s School of Management. While at Purdue, he played quarterback for the Boilermakers football team. He is a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council for Purdue’s Krannert School of Management.

 

Bill Payne 

Chief of Staff


Bill Payne works with the company’s Office of the Chief Executive and assists in overseeing day-to-day management of the global Alticor Inc. enterprise.

Payne is on his second tour of duty with Amway, having worked in sales and marketing from 1979 to 1985. He rejoined the firm in 1999 to take on the chief of staff role.

Prior to his return, Payne served as president of The Windquest Group, a privately held, multi-company operating firm. He was also a partner in Payne-Zwiep and Company, a Grand Rapids, Michigan-based mergers and acquisitions firm, and has also served in marketing and sales management positions with Owens-Illinois, Inc.

Payne was born in Lancaster, Ohio, and raised in Benton Harbor, Michigan. He is a graduate of Albion College, where he received a bachelor of arts degree, and Bowling Green State University, where he earned a master’s degree in business administration. He has also attended executive study programs at The University of Chicago and the University of Michigan.

Payne is active in a variety of business and community activities. He is a graduate of Leadership Grand Rapids and a life member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. Payne is a member of the board of directors at Universal Forest Products, Inc. in Grand Rapids, Mich., and Spring Hill Camps in Evart, Michigan.

 

George Calvert 

Vice President, Research & Development
and Supply Chain


George David Calvert, Ph.D., oversees all global supply chain, research and development (R&D) functions for Amway. On the Supply Chain side, he is responsible for all manufacturing, logistics, demand planning, purchasing, project management, contract sales, customs, facilities, farming operations and transportation. Within R&D, Calvert is responsible for all technical functions, including formulation, design, engineering, process development, package development, regulatory compliance, safety and quality assurance.

Calvert formerly was vice president of Research and Development, Quality Assurance, and Corporate Business Innovations. His responsibilities included product development, design, formulation, package engineering, process engineering, prototyping, analytical and bioassay method development, technical/regulatory analysis, product registration, toxicology, product safety, and quality assurance. He also headed the company’s business innovations function.

Calvert joined Amway in 1989 and has held numerous technical management positions. He began his career as a group leader in Analytical Services. He has served in various corporate positions within Product Development, including senior group leader of Nutritional Food Product Development, manager of Nutrition Research and Development, and senior manager of Home Tech Research and Development. He also served as director of Quality Assurance and Analytical Services.

Calvert earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from the College of William and Mary, and a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from the University of South Carolina. He is a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and Sigma Xi. He serves on the board of directors for the Personal Care Products Council, and is past chairman of the board for the Soap and Detergent Association (SDA). He also was on the board of directors for Interleukin Genetics, Inc.

 

Gan Che Eng 

President, Amway Greater China


As president of Amway Greater China, Gan Chee Eng oversees Amway’s operations in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

He joined Amway in 1993, and has held progressively responsible positions in many areas, including production, brand building, marketing and corporate innovation. In addition to his current role, he has served as director and general manager of manufacturing, vice president of Amway China, vice president of Amway Greater China, and chief marketing officer of Amway Greater China and Southeast Asia.

Amway China is the largest market of Amway globally, and Amway’s Guangzhou factory, established under his supervision, is now Amway’s largest manufacturing base outside of the United States. Amway’s NUTRILITE and ARTISTRY brands rank #1 in the nutritional supplements and premium skincare categories in China.

Before joining Amway, Gan Chee Eng worked for Unilever for more than 10 years in Malaysia, Taiwan and Shanghai. He graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering in Singapore.

Cheng graduated from the University of Hong Kong with a bachelor of arts degree with honors and also received a master’s of business administration degree from the university. She began her career with Amway in 1977.

Candace Matthews 

Chief Marketing Officer


Candace Matthews leads Amway’s global enterprise marketing strategy. She heads the Global Marketing team focusing on Global Category Marketing (including Beauty, Wellness and Home Care), the Global Amway Brand, Consumer and Market Insights, as well as Corporate Citizenship and Corporate Communications.

Matthews joined Amway in 2007. She previously served as president of SoftSheen-Carson, Consumer Products Division of L’Oreal USA, and also held positions as vice president, New Product and Package Innovation, and managing director, Non-Cola Brands, with the Coca-Cola Company. In addition, she held senior marketing positions at the CIBA Vision Corporation; Bausch + Lomb, Oral Care Division; Procter & Gamble, Cosmetics & Fragrance Division; and General Mills, where she began her marketing career.

Matthews is a member of the Executive Leadership Council, and currently serves on the boards of Cosmetic Executive Women, Fifth Third Bank – Western Michigan, Figure Skating in Harlem and Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park. She is a past member of the board of trustees at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and previously served on the Stanford University Graduate School of Business Advisory Council. Matthews’ professional background and her community service have landed her on the pages of such major publications as Ebony, Essence, Black Enterprise, Glamour, Salon Sense and The Wall Street Journal. Black Enterprise named her 2009 Corporate Executive of the Year.

A native of New Brighton, Penn., Matthews received a bachelor of science degree in metallurgical engineering and administrative and management science from Carnegie Mellon University. She also earned an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

 

Jim Payne 

Executive Vice President, Sales/Amway Regions


Jim Payne heads the new regionalization of Amway. He is responsible for leading growth in Amway’s direct selling markets of North America, Latin America, Europe, South Africa, India, Australia, New Zealand and the Southeast Asia region that includes Japan, Korea, Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Before being named to his current position in 2005, Payne was senior vice president of Amway, responsible for numerous international affiliates. From 1999 through 2000, Payne served as president and representative director of Amway Japan, Ltd., where he remains on the board of directors. Since 1980, his Amway career has taken him around the world, including positions as director and then vice president of new market development, responsible for expanding Amway markets worldwide. Payne also served as general manager of Amway Germany, regional manager for the Poland and Switzerland affiliates, and managing director of Amway Thailand.

A native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Payne earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids. He is a member of the West Michigan World Affairs Council and the Economic Club of Grand Rapids. He is a member of the board of directors of the Van Andel Global Trade Center. He and his wife Linda serve on the board of Operation Smile – Michigan.
